The grid operator told regulators on Oct. 13 of the shortfall as peak demand hit about 3,234 MW in August.
LUMA told regulators of a power generation deficit of 700 to 850 megawatts on the Puerto Rico electrical grid, according to a filing reported on Oct. 13.
The operator said peak electrical demand reached about 3,234 MW during August 2026. In August, the Puerto Rico Energy Negotiator ordered LUMA to complete technical studies within eight weeks for connecting 800 MW of temporary generation to the grid.
Regulators told LUMA to evaluate connection sites at Aguirre, San Juan, Palo Seco, Costa Sur, Sabana Llana, Cambalache, Yabucoa and Mayagüez. The 800 MW the Negotiator ordered studied falls within the deficit range LUMA reported, but the filings here do not state how much new generation would actually come online, or when.
