LUMA Energy said on Tuesday that there is high risk of rolling power outages during peak evening consumption hours in Puerto Rico.[1] A separate account described the same peak-hour warning as a risk of temporary outages.[2] The warning lands in the middle of planned work. LUMA said it will carry out grid improvement works across Puerto Rico between Oct 26 and Oct 31, and that temporary service interruptions may occur in affected communities during those works.[3][4] It also said about 750 customers in Fajardo Gardens and areas near highway PR-194 will lose power on Oct 29.[5] This is not new ground for the island. Puerto Rico sees frequent prolonged outages tied to an aging electrical grid and hurricane activity, according to Solar Power World.[6] José Caraballo Cueto said the LUMA Energy grid operation concession did not bring down electricity costs as originally expected.[7] Chef José Santiago told Metro Puerto Rico on Oct 27 that rising gas, electricity and food costs have severely cut profit margins at his restaurants.[8] The immediate dates to hold are the Fajardo outage on Oct 29 and the maintenance window that LUMA set to close Oct 31.
