Puerto Rico's energy czar has ordered LUMA Energy to investigate a wave of unusual electricity bill increases, giving the company five calendar days to answer in writing. Josué A. Colón Ortiz, executive director of the AAPP, sent the letter on Saturday, Oct 24.[1]
The order sets a hard deadline: a certified written report on the billing complaints within five days.[2] Colón also told LUMA to look at a specific suspect, whether smart meter installation, configuration or system integration played a part in the reported spikes.[3] That detail narrows the question for customers who have watched their bills climb without a clear reason.
LUMA Energy confirmed it received the official letter and said it will respond to all the requirements.[4] In public, the company has held its ground, saying its billing systems are reliable and that it has found no irregularities in its processes to date.[5]
The letter followed a protest. About one hundred customers gathered Saturday outside LUMA's Santurce headquarters over high electricity costs.[6] With a five-day clock now running, the next word belongs to the certified report LUMA owes the AAPP.[7]El zar de energía de Puerto Rico ordenó a LUMA Energy investigar una ola de aumentos inusuales en las facturas eléctricas, dándole a la compañía cinco días calendario para responder por escrito.
