LUMA Energy will carry out maintenance, replacement and repair work on electrical infrastructure in 15 municipalities in Puerto Rico on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026.[1]
The scheduled work comes as two generation units are down. Genera Puerto Rico said a boiler rupture has kept Unit 2 of the Aguirre Central power plant in Salinas out of service.[3] A day earlier, on Monday, Genera PR and LUMA Energy reported that Unit 5 of the San Juan Central power plant went out of service suddenly, leaving 100,039 customers without electricity at 12:05 p.m.[4]
The read here is that the grid was already short on generation going into the Tuesday work; the facts name the two failed units and the customer count, but do not say whether the maintenance in the 15 municipalities relates to either outage.
Weather was also a factor on the island Tuesday. Doppler radar located a severe thunderstorm near Utuado at 1:49 p.m., moving westward at 5 to 15 mph.[2]
