La Isla Que VieneOpinionCommentary, not the record

Deaths beat births in every town on the island. Start with the cradle.

The Census counted 17,950 births and 32,857 deaths in one year - until that gap closes, no policy can hold the population.

The new Census estimates say Puerto Rico is smaller again, and the reason sits in the birth column. Between July 2024 and July 2025, the island lost 17,686 people, down to 3.2 million, a drop of 0.6% from the year before.[3] I have argued in this series that migration is draining us. This week I want to argue the other loss, the quieter one, the one that starts in the maternity ward.
