Abraham Freyre Medina, the attorney for Power Expectations, LLC, announced on Thursday that the company filed a legal appeal in the Federal Court in Hato Rey to challenge the cancellation of its contract for a 400 megawatt temporary power generation project in Puerto Rico.[1] The dispute centers on a facility intended to provide temporary power generation, a service that becomes increasingly relevant as extreme drought conditions persist across the island. The US Drought Monitor reported that extreme drought (D3) now covers 40.99% of Puerto Rico, a decrease from 44.45% reported the previous week.[2] Earlier data from June showed the territory saw a reduction of 3.46 points in extreme drought coverage, dropping from 44.45% to 40.99%.[3] While the legal battle over power infrastructure moves forward, other critical services face immediate disruptions. The Clinic of the School of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico will not be able to attend to 503 patients scheduled for Thursday, September 4, due to the extension of a strike declared by the Workers' Union.[5] Additionally, Prosol UTIER reported that at least four ICP buildings in the metropolitan area, including the General Archive of Puerto Rico and the National Library, have failing air conditioning systems.[4] In related health oversight matters, the Cámara de Representantes announced it will investigate the management of health services in Culebra and summon Health Secretary Víctor Ramos to testify under oath.[6]
