School closures follow the missing children, not a plot

Every fight over closed schools starts by hunting for a villain. That hunt is wasted. Total school enrollment has dropped 44% since 2006 [1]. More than 600 public schools have closed in the past decade [3]. The education department has proposed closing 83 more by 2026 [2]. These numbers do not trace a plot. They trace the birth curve. They trace the families that packed up and left. You cannot run full schools when there are no children to sit in the desks. Outrage will not put students there. Only more children born here, and more families choosing to stay, will.
