Three journalist organizations demanded that Governor Jenniffer González Colón's administration immediately end what they called arbitrary press access restrictions at La Fortaleza.[1] The Asociación de Periodistas de Puerto Rico, the Overseas Press Club de Puerto Rico, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Puerto Rico signed the demand. They are asking the administration to restore an on-site press workspace at or near La Fortaleza, after the official press room was closed and relocated outside the main facility.[2] The groups denounced the closure of the press room at the Executive Mansion and the relocation of journalists to the Palacio Rojo building outside its gates.[3][4] The groups had met with Governor González on October 9.[5] She promised to resolve some of the press claims, but no changes came in the month that followed.[6] The organizations also denounced a press conference broadcast on social media on October 29 in which the presence of journalists was simulated.[7] The press groups called out the fake conference.[8] La Fortaleza's response came from Public Affairs Secretary Jean Peña Payano, who rejected claims that the administration limits press access.[9] Every press conference the mansion convenes, he said, invites 435 journalists and editors, is streamed live, and carries no limit on the number of questions.[10][11][12] He pointed to sessions where he spent up to two hours and 47 minutes answering the media, and dismissed the associations' complaints as “frivolous attacks”.[13][14] Peña Payano also referenced what he described as a government win at the Supreme Court in a case involving the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo, without detailing its scope.[15]
