Hiram Torres Montalvo, the candidate for mayor of Cataño, said on Aug 31 that he does not rule out evaluating the return of the Christopher Columbus statue to the municipality as an economic development and tourism project [4]. The statue was acquired in the 1990s by former mayor Edwin Rivera Sierra but was never installed and later ended up in the hands of businessman José González Freire in Arecibo [1]. González Freire estimated in April 2025 that moving the statue from Arecibo to Cataño would cost about $10 million [2]. The late Cataño mayor Julio Alicea Vasallo had also considered returning the Columbus statue from Arecibo, exploring that possibility in April 2025 [3]. The read here is that Torres Montalvo is treating the statue not just as a historical artifact but as a potential asset for the local economy, continuing a line of interest from previous leadership that dates back to 2025.
