The Senate of Puerto Rico approved two major bills on Monday that will reshape the island's healthcare delivery and cosmetic service regulations. Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz introduced Senate Bill 867, which establishes the Medical Reform Law for Efficiency, Health, and Agility, or REMESA. The law requires that all health claims be submitted and paid through an electronic system within specific deadlines.[1] In a separate move, the chamber approved Proyecto del Senado 971, sponsored by Senator Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez, with 21 votes. This legislation creates the Junta Examinadora de Servicios Estéticos de Puerto Rico and mandates that minimally invasive aesthetic procedures and sueroterapia be performed only under the direct or delegated supervision of a medical doctor.[2] The legislative session also confirmed Julie O. Gómez Gómez as the Secretary of the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation following a public hearing.[3]^4^5^6 The Senate approved the confirmation on a Monday, a day that also saw the passage of the two new regulatory bills.[7]^8
