Award-winning Puerto Rican documentarian turns her lens on the grid - starting with Culebra
Alana Mediavilla, whose 'Dirty Coin' took the island's top documentary prize, is working on 'Isla Solar' - energy independence in Culebra, where a DOE-financed solar buildout is underway.
Filmmaker Alana Mediavilla is working on 'Isla Solar,' a documentary on energy independence in Culebra, announced by her media company ReCompute.tv on Oct 14.[1][2][3]
Mediavilla's previous feature, 'Dirty Coin,' was filmed across four continents at bitcoin mining sites and won Best National Documentary at the Puerto Rico Film Festival, held Sept 21, 2025.[4][5][6]
Her new subject is a community already building. Mujeres de Islas operates a solar-powered community kitchen in Culebra and has made the island's bid to become the first fully solar-powered island in the Americas a structural goal - a vision that took shape after Hurricane María exposed diesel dependence.[7] The Environmental Defense Fund has announced a new community-based solar project for the island municipality financed by the U.S.
