The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority has filed an amended federal lawsuit seeking at least $100 million in damages from New Fortress Energy for undelivered gas and related costs, NotiCel reports. [1] The utility ran on diesel when the gas stopped. NotiCel reports PREPA incurred $32 million in excess diesel generation costs during a 28-day New Fortress Energy gas delivery outage between Sept. 16 and Oct. 13. [2] That is the hard number behind the claim: nearly a month of a plant burning the more expensive fuel because the contracted gas did not arrive. The contract fight has drawn fire at the Capitol. Metro Puerto Rico reports Denis Márquez Lebrón alleged New Fortress Energy has repeatedly failed to deliver contracted gas supplies, forcing PREPA to buy additional diesel. [3] He also stated the company never delivered the promised electricity bill savings, and that Puerto Rico now has the highest power rates in its history, Metro Puerto Rico reports. [4] The through-line is the gas. The diesel cost PREPA cites in court is the same undelivered supply Márquez Lebrón points to at the Capitol. The figure to hold is the $32 million the utility says it spent on diesel over those 28 days.
