Suzanne Roig remains Secretary of the Department of the Family, Public Affairs Secretary Jean Peña Payano said on 25 October.[1]
The statement answers one open question for readers following the department: who is running it. Peña Payano's word places Roig in the job, with no change at the top.
This paper reported on 24 October that the Department of the Family was facing probes and a $2.5M suit tied to a child care center. The government's confirmation that Roig stays speaks to leadership, not to the status of those matters.
The scrutiny has grown since. PPD general secretary Manuel Calderón Cerame said on the El Nuevo Día podcast Lo de Hoy that Roig should be removed immediately, alleging she lied under oath in Senate testimony about the contracting process behind the NOLA Education contract.[2][3][4] A Senate commission is investigating the claims tied to that contract process.[5]
Separately, an administrative investigation into Roig at the Government Ethics Office has reached what the office called an exhaustive stage, examining whether she benefited or favored others in a contract awarded while she worked at the Department of Health in 2021. Roig also faces separate criminal investigations in her current position.[6][7][8]
On 21 October, Blanca García Sostre, the former regional director of the Department of the Family in Arecibo, filed a civil lawsuit against Roig and three other officials at the Arecibo court. She alleges a pattern of workplace harassment and verbal abuse from 2025 through June 2026 and claims $1.35 million in damages, alleging Roig insulted her professional competence.[9][10][11][12][13]
The Senate hearing record from 7 October adds the detail behind those probes. Blanca Medina Díaz, the former ADSEF administrator, testified before the Senate Family Commission under Senate Resolution 56.[14][15][16] She said Suzanne Roig Fuertes pressured her repeatedly to sign the Star Academy contract - a proposal worth up to $38 million, submitted by NOLA Education LLC and slated to be paid with federal TANF funds.[17][18][19][20] By her account, Roig first raised the contract as a signing priority in April 2026, at the start of her tenure at the agency.[21]
Her testimony also described an evaluation that bypassed the agency's own committee: ADSEF did not design the evaluation metrics, and the Star Academy proposal was scored instead by LAP Consulting Group, a contractor paid under a $180,000 contract with the department.[22][23][24]Suzanne Roig permanece como secretaria del Departamento de la Familia, dijo el secretario de Asuntos Públicos, Jean Peña Payano, el 25 de octubre.[1]
