Evertec is about to be a billion-dollar company. The lesson is bigger than the quarter.
The San Juan payments firm just posted 24% revenue growth by selling to Latin America. Half its business is now outside Puerto Rico - a rare homegrown export story, and a playbook most local companies never try.
Evertec, the San Juan-based payments company behind ATH and ATH Móvil, reported third-quarter revenue of $283 million, up 24% from a year earlier, and raised its full-year outlook to between $1.088 billion and $1.096 billion - which would make it a billion-dollar business for the first time[^ffi_d391f9d2f9494d0d][^ffi_537c3e5057b74a40].
The number that matters more for Puerto Rico's economy: nearly half of Evertec's revenue now comes from outside the island, up from 14% in 2015[^ffi_c39316c7670246a2]. Its Latin America segment alone produced $143.6 million in the quarter[^ffi_7c185d1111964a22].
How a Puerto Rican company got there
The strategy was patient. Evertec built expertise serving a small, sophisticated home market - payments processing, then software - and used acquisitions to sell that same expertise where the market is bigger: Sinqia, a software provider to more than 900 Brazilian financial institutions, acquired in 2023 for about $591 million including debt[^ffi_0fcaa18d97174ec0]. It now operates in 26 Latin American countries[^ffi_ed3a19b0b4f14d6d].
The timing is policy-driven. Brazil's Pix instant-payment system and Colombia's Bre-B are forcing banks to modernize their back-office software - exactly what Evertec sells. The company is now piloting AI in software development and fraud prevention, positioning for the next product cycle[^ffi_99ccb536d4af4d4c].
At home, ATH Móvil remains dominant with more than 2 million users - on an island of roughly 3.2 million - with no visible challenger taking share[^ffi_c0c62d965f844c09].
The so-what
Puerto Rico's export base is dominated by multinational manufacturers; locally grown services exporters are close to nonexistent. Evertec shows the alternative path: bilingual workforce, U.S. regulatory standing and proximity to Latin America become worth real money the moment a company decides to sell beyond the island. For founders and investors, the template is build at home, then sell the playbook abroad - the same thesis that underlies the island's budding venture ecosystem, at ten times the scale.
