Elon Musk said on Friday, Oct. 30, that Puerto Rico becoming a US state would be a dangerous scenario for the nation's political future. [1] The businessman and Republican donor posted on the social platform X that a 2028 Democratic sweep of the federal government would result in statehood for both Puerto Rico and Washington DC. [2][3] Statehood appeared alongside two other items in the same warning: Musk wrote that Democrats would also open the borders and legalize everyone living in the country illegally, and enlarge the Supreme Court, producing what he called a permanent one-party state. [4][5][6] All that is needed to prevent it, he wrote, is 51 Republican senators in 2029, and he urged readers to vote for Republican Senate candidates. [7][8] The Senate arithmetic he warns about is not fixed: people born in Puerto Rico have held US citizenship since 1917, the island has no voting representation in the Senate today, and statehood would not reserve Senate seats for any party.
