The Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) senate delegation presented a legislative proposal to ban power service suspension for vulnerable patients dependent on life-support medical equipment. [1] Puerto Rican PIP senators María de Lourdes Santiago Negrón and Adrián González Costa introduced legislation to prevent power disconnections for medically vulnerable patients on payment plans. [2] The proposal includes removing the legal requirement for annual re-certification of medical condition to maintain energy subsidy eligibility. [3][6] The proposed bill would protect medical subsidy recipients with active payment plans from electric service disconnection even with outstanding debt. [4] Senator María de Lourdes Santiago Negrón stated annual medical recertification is unreasonable for permanent conditions including multiple sclerosis, epidermolysis bullosa, and peritoneal dialysis. [5] Senator Adrián González Costa stated that a similar prior amendment he proposed was rejected during the last senate session. [7]
