On a Saturday in October, several hundred people rallied outside LUMA Energy offices as a Bayamon business owner cited electricity costs for closing in September.
Several hundred people protested outside LUMA Energy offices in San Juan on a Saturday over electricity costs and blackouts.
The grid's cost has already forced closures. Christian Delgado Ortiz shut his Bayamon auto paint and detailing business in September, citing rising electricity costs and power grid failures. Denis Marquez Lebron said New Fortress Energy failed to deliver promised electricity bill savings and instead produced the highest power costs in Puerto Rico's history.
LUMA Energy responded on Oct 24. In an official release, the company said it does not purchase fuel, generate electricity, or approve electricity tariff increases in Puerto Rico.
The dispute over who sets and pays for power runs alongside separate federal relief for businesses hit by drought. Gov. Jenniffer Gonzalez Colon and DDEC Secretary Carlos J. Rios Pierluisi announced the availability of SBA federal EIDL disaster loans for drought-impacted businesses.
