The United States Department of Energy awarded Puerto Rico $6.34M this week for electrical grid modernization, reliability improvements and cost reduction work.

The funding, reported by Telemundo Puerto Rico, Periódico Presencia and Primera Hora, is directed at grid modernization. It arrives during a strain on the island's generation: a multi-week interruption in LNG supply has forced Puerto Rico's electrical system onto diesel fuel for power generation. El Nuevo Día reports the natural gas supply problems have pushed operators toward the more costly diesel.

The money and the fuel are separate lines on the same grid, and nothing in the record links the $6.34M to the diesel switch. On 2026-10-23, Governor Jenniffer González said on social media she would deliver an important public message on energy. That message, as announced, had not yet been delivered.

A public protest against LUMA Energy is set for 09:00 on 24 October 2026 at LUMA offices in Santurce.
