The Social Security Administration announced the cost-of-living adjustment on a Wednesday, lifting monthly payments for nearly 72 million people, including on the island.
The Social Security Administration announced that beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment in 2027, raising monthly payments for nearly 72 million Americans, including those in Puerto Rico.
The figures on how many people the raise reaches vary by source. One account put the 2027 adjustment at about 72 million beneficiaries across the United States and Puerto Rico. Another counted roughly 76 million people across the United States and all its territories, Puerto Rico among them.
The adjustment lands as the island's population keeps shrinking. Census data shows Puerto Rico's population fell 0.6% to 3.2 million from 2024 to 2025. The number of Puerto Rico born people living in US states and Washington, D.C., climbed from 1.3 million in 2000 to 1.6 million in 2021, according to Pew Research Center. Pew also found 28% of Puerto Ricans living in the 50 states and D.C. were born on the island.
